Fundamental Movement

4th and 5th Class completed a block of work with Shaun Doherty from Elevate Kids over 6 weeks in January and February. We loved engaging with a very varied and exciting range of games and activities to help us work on our core strength and fundamental skills such as balance and movement.

Gymnastics

Our gymnastics coach, Craig, returned to help us work on all our gymnastics skills. We have been stretching, balancing, jumping and rolling during this block of work. We have improved our skills and gained confidence in some of the more difficult areas of gymnastics.

Landscape Pictures using Oil Pastels

The artist of the month for January was Leo Quinlan. This artist painted many beautiful landscapes. We created abstract landscape pictures in bright, vibrant colours using oil pastels. Have a look at our creations as you pass our classroom!

Winter Silhouette Paintings

We read the poem ‘Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening’ by Robert Frost. The imagery in this poem inspired us to create Winter Moon Silhouette pictures which are displayed outside our classroom.

The Aztecs

As part of our January theme on ‘The Sun’ in SESE we looked at the Aztecs. These were an ancient Mexican civilization who worshipped many gods including the sun. We recreated their famous plates using our own designs. Here are our finished sun dials.

4th and 5th Class had a very busy science week 2023. This year's theme was "Human?" so we looked at some of our senses and investigated the following:

1. Tasting in the absence of sight and smell

2. Fingerprints

3. Balancing in the absence of sight

4. Our heart rate and the effects of exercise on this

4. Sight- the eye and refraction/reflection of light

In other areas we:

-Made the strongest and most effective boats using blu tac

-Made the tallest free-standing tower using 1 metre of tinfoil

-Investigated wind power using balloon

Dia dhìobh go lèir ò rang a ceathair agus rang a cùig! Introducing this year's 4th Class and half of 5th Class who will be with Ms. Mc Govern this year. We are looking forward to lots of learning and, hopefully, many memories to be made and good times to be had in the coming few months. Keep an eye on our page to see what we have been getting up to!!

Sun Set Pictures

We completed sun set paintings in art based on our work on the sun in Science.

Piet Mondrian

We studied the work of the artist Piet Mondrian and used his well-known style of abstract art to create animal pictures. We used straight intersecting lines and the primary colours blue, red and yellow.

Design a Flip-Flop

We have been getting into the spirit of summer in 4th class as we think about sunny days at the beach. We designed our own flip-flops and created beach backgrounds to go with them.

Project Work in History

4th class learned about the Middle Ages in History and completed project work in pairs and small groups. We looked at different aspects of the Middle Ages including: Medieval Markets, The Black Death, Medieval Medicine, Medieval Crafts and Medieval Castles and Forts.

Friendship Week

Friendship week ran from the 14th to the 18th of November. We looked at the qualities of a good friend and highlighted all the ways that we can be good friends and classmates. We made flowers to show these qualities and they have been used to make a whole-school garden which is on display at the front door of the school. We made name chains and connected them to celebrate our classes and the friendships within them. We also had games hour on Friday where we had the chance to play board games with our friends. We finished the week with a popcorn party in the company of our friends!

Origami

On Thursday 10th November we were joined by Pamela from Cavan County Library who introduced us to the art of origami. We experimented with paper folding and made our own rockets before making segments of a snake which were joined together to make a whole-class creation. We really enjoyed this and intend to continue with this craft later in the school year.

Buddy System

Our class continues to work with first class as part of the class buddy system We completed 3 fun experiments with 1st class last week and became teachers and scientists for half an hour. Our 4th class children led the demonstrations and explained the reasons behind each action/result as the experiment was completed.

Science Week

Science week took place from 14th to the 18th of November. We engaged in lots of experiments both at home and in school. These included-bouncy egg, dancing raisins, raining shaving foam and racing balloons. We also worked in pairs to find information on and create projects based on scientists and inventors. We presented these in class and learned lots of interesting information along the way.

Hallowe’en in 4th Class

4th Class looked very different on Friday 28th October!! We were joined by Harry Potter, clowns, skeletons, zombie minions, Chrissy the cheerleader, witches, zombies, sumo wrestlers, karate kids, the Riddler, Slappy, mummies, cowgirls, zombie school girls, Pennywise, Hermoine, dead djs, zombie cheerleaders, the Purge, vampires, spiders and a zombie bride!!

There was a fabulous array of Hallowe’en masks as part of our mask competition. After much deliberation the top 3 masks were chosen. Our winners were: Ella Lynch, Eva Abisilaite and Kacper Czop. Well done to all the entrants and especially to the prize winners.

Maths Week in 4th Class

There were lots of mathematical activities going on in 4th class as part of Maths Week 2022.

We completed a maths trail around the school and used lots of our mathematical skills to solve problems relating to the different areas in maths.

We used our team skills to complete relays where we collected numbers and matched them correctly.

We had great fun playing games such as ‘Maths Zap’ and ‘Hit the Button’ to practice our tables.

On Friday we played games with our buddies in first class and practiced using the 100 square and number line to add numbers. We also played BINGO.

We finished the week with a maths quiz. Great mathematical fun and learning was had by all!

In 4th class we explored warm and cool colours.

We looked at and discussed various paintings that used either warm or cool colours. We decided that warm colours give a warm, happy, sunny feeling while cool colours make us feel a sense of cold or sadness. Painters can use these colours to convey a mood or feeling very effectively.

We then worked to create pieces of art that highlighted the contrast between the two colour groups.
