History Milltown N.S.

Our school consists of seven mainstream classrooms, two autistic classes, a General Purpose Room, Office, Staff Room, Wheelchair Accessible Toilet, Kitchen Area and one Prefab. We are very lucky to also have a handball alley.

Our school is situated beside Milltown village in the parish of Drumlane. The parish is very rural with Milltown as the only village. There is a population of approximately 900 people in the parish. It is divided from the parish of Annagh on the east by the River erne which flows into Northern Ireland. The area is made up of small hills or drumlins, divided by lakes and streams. At one time, there was an oak forest but it was cut down centuries ago. This is reflected in the names of town lands in the area.

We understand that education in the Milltown area began in 1824 in the form of a ‘hedge school’.

In May 1862 an application was forwarded to the commissioners, proposing that a new school house capable of accommodating 150 pupils be erected in Monea on a site made available by Charles Brady. Construction work began in late 1862 and the now two-room schoolhouse was ready for occupation by the end of 1863.

This school survived until 1973 when it was demolished to make way for the new central school, which was a prefabricated building and only lasted 14 years, and then it was also demolished and replaced by the current building in the summer of 1988.

Further extensions were built in 2008, 2011 and 2015.

Milltown N.S. encourages the involvement of parents through home-school contacts and through their involvement in the development and growth of the Parents’ Association.

In Milltown N.S. we endeavour to enhance the self-esteem of everyone in the school community, to imbue in the pupils respect for themselves, for other people and for property and to encourage the development of personal responsibility. We aim to prepare our pupils for their place in a modern multicultural society by actively promoting equality and by celebrating the diversity we have within our school community.

We strive to promote, both individually and collectively, the professional and personal development of teachers through staff development programmes.
